Examining My Own Heart and Loving Others on September 11

Today, amid the the sadness of remembering how woeful this day was twelve years ago, I am trying to examine my own heart.

More than ever, I believe in the ways of Jesus and want to more fully incorporate them into my own life. The way of Jesus is to love our enemies, bless them, pray for them, and do good to them. The way of Jesus is overcoming evil with good.

May this be the way of Thomas as well. I'm not yet there, but by God's grace we're making progress.

On this day of all days, would you join me in praying for ourselves the prayer of Francis of Assisi?

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
